Article : Theists cannot keep it in their pants
Posted by mrjohnno on 2009/7/23 8:10:00 (139 reads)

Open in new windowThe ideological reasoning behind freedom of belief is to allow individuals the freedom to think what they will, believe what they wish. Even if you are at the extreme in that you believe yourself to be a chicken sandwich, are able to fend for yourself and pose no danger to others, you are at liberty to do so. I certainly would not like any restrictions on this as it points to some Orwellian nightmare.

What was not intended by this freedom of belief is to intrude on others or to expect respect for these beliefs. By doing so, you break the bonds of personal freedom and restrict the personal freedom of others.

Do we see this in today’s world? I think we do....

Article : Stop faith schools stupefying children now
Posted by mrjohnno on 2009/7/16 14:10:00 (285 reads)

Open in new windowAustralian academic Andrew Jakubowicz can be added to the list of people worried about faith schools and their negative effect on social cohesion. Whilst falling short of proposing an out and out ban, he indicates that the level of their increase “.. may significantly undermine three key struts in the whole edifice of social cohesion and modern citizenship - namely intercultural competence, secularism as a core social value and interactive life-long learning”.

This echo’s a recent call (April 09 UK) by the National Union of Teachers who object on the grounds that their admission policies create segregated schooling. It does seem a shame that they had to lower the level of their argument to the point of it being ‘bleedin’ obvious’. Perhaps they too realise that the present UK government has shown an inability to perform more than one task at a time.

Article : Faith, the final frontier
Posted by mrjohnno on 2009/7/15 9:10:00 (265 reads)

Open in new windowBeing that religious belief is based on ancient dogma, you would be hard pressed to envisage it going forward. Remaining essentially the same would have to be considered its place. But no, religious belief would appear to be actually going backward in that reasoning accepted by the western Christian church in the past is being totally ignored by its adherents now.

The idea of ‘faith’ came about in Christianity during the late middle age’s in a gradual manner and permeated all religious belief over the next hundred years or so. Some would say that it was the last time the three ‘great’ monotheisms saw eye to eye. No doubt this was due to the realisation that they had no choice.

Article : Blasphemy in the Emerald Isle
Posted by mrjohnno on 2009/7/14 5:50:00 (535 reads)

Open in new windowWith the introduction of the updated law regarding blasphemy, Ireland has effectively changed their relationship with the International Date Line (IDL). Travelers will soon need to wind back their watches to the tune of >500 years. What makes it even worse is that no individual was even asking for it.

The Constitution states that "blasphemy shall be an offense punishable in accordance with law" but the previous legislation was pretty much worthless owning to not actually specifying what blasphemy is. The possibility of holding a referendum on deleting the text has been discounted due to costs though it could be included in the one for the Lisbon treaty in October.
