All Yoda Scenes Comparison - Star Wars The Phantom Menace
A comparison of every scene with Yoda in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The original puppet from 1999 looked awkward and weird and miscolored. So, in one of his more popular changes, Lucas decided to edit in a CGI Yoda for the Blu-ray release.
I, personally, am one of the few people in the world who prefers the original puppet. It was a sign of how Episode I was the perfect blend of practical effects and CGI, before everything went digital.
This also very subtly highlights one of my biggest issues with Yoda in most of the prequel trilogy, in which how serious he is constantly. I think this is best illustrated in the final shot of Yoda at the parade. The Yoda puppet looks happily enjoying the party, while the updated model looks pissed off. In the original Empire, Yoda was introduced as a jokester. He most certainly had a sense of humor, and all throughout the prequels that characterization was missing.
All Yoda does is act frustrated and confused. He doesn't even have many wise lines in all three films. At least with the puppet, there's an illusion of levity to Yoda. But I don't want to analyze too much, its just a comparison video.
