Beirut Explosion of 2020: A Tragedy That Shook Lebanon

On August 4, 2020, a massive explosion rocked Beirut, Lebanon's capital, killing over 200 people, injuring thousands, and causing widespread destruction. The blast occurred at the Port of Beirut, where 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, improperly stored for years, detonated. The explosion devastated entire neighborhoods, displacing around 300,000 people and severely damaging the city's infrastructure.

The catastrophe exposed Lebanon’s long-standing issues with government corruption and negligence, sparking public outrage and leading to mass protests demanding accountability. The incident also deepened Lebanon’s economic and political crises, which continue to this day.

International aid flowed in, but recovery has been slow due to Lebanon’s ongoing political turmoil. The explosion remains a stark symbol of Lebanon’s struggles, calling for reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
