UK's Longest Surviving DVD Rental Store Thrives 40 Years After Opening

The owner of the UK's longest surviving DVD rental store is amazed that business is still thriving, four decades after its opening. Colin Richards, 71, founded TVL Allstar Video in Haverhill, Suffolk, in 1984. Initially, the shop began by leasing video tapes to other businesses before Richards decided to shift focus and offer film rentals directly to customers.

Today, TVL Allstar Video boasts an impressive collection of around 8,500 DVDs, including popular titles like Forrest Gump, which has been borrowed over 2,000 times. Despite the rise of digital streaming services, the store continues to attract customers, with Richards expressing surprise at the enduring popularity of his business. As one of the few remaining independent DVD rental shops in the UK, TVL Allstar Video has become a local institution, proving that there is still a market for physical rentals even in the age of online streaming.
